For a long time, it was thought that Christopher Columbus was the first European to discover America in 1492, but this isn’t true. A viking named Leif Ericson, actually discovered America in 1001, 500 years before Columbus! October 9th was chosen as the date to celebrate Leif Ericson, although it is not associated with any event in Leif’s life.
