The Month of August:
- Calendar – In the old ten-month Roman calendar, August was the sixth month. About 700 BC, it became the eighth month when January and February were added to the year before March by King Pompilius, who gave it 29 days. Julius Ceasar added 2 days when he created the Julian calendar and renamed it in honor of his son, Augustus.
- Season – In the Southern Hemisphere, August is the seasonal equivalent of February in the Northern Hemisphere. In many European countries, August is the holiday month for most workers. Numerous religious holidays occurred during August in ancient Rome.
- Moon – “Full Sturgeon Moon” – Some Native American tribes knew that the sturgeon of the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain were most readily caught during this full Moon. Others called it the Green Corn Moon.
- Birthstone – peridot, sardonyx, and spinel
- Flowers – gladiolus or poppy, meaning beauty, strength of character, love, marriage and family.
- Zodiac – Leo (until August 22) and Virgo (from August 23 onwards).
