The Month of February:
- Calendar – February is the second month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian calendars. It is the shortest month of the year as it is the only month to have a length of less than 30 days. The month has 28 days in common years or 29 days in leap years, with the quadrennial 29th day being called the “leap day.”
- History – The Roman month Februarius was named after the Latin term februum, which means purification, via the purification ritual Februa held on February 15 (full moon) in the old lunar Roman calendar. January and February were the last two months to be added to the Roman calendar, since the Romans originally considered winter a monthless period.
- Season – February is the third month of meteorological winter in the Northern Hemisphere. In the Southern Hemisphere, February is the last month of summer (the seasonal equivalent of August in the Northern Hemisphere, in meteorological reckoning).
- Moon – The February Full Moon is named after the snow on the ground. Some Native American tribes named this the Hunger Moon; others called it the Storm Moon. About once every 19 years, February does not have a Full Moon, known as a Black Moon. In 2018, this is the case in most time zones. Instead, January and March have two Full Moons each, which makes it a double Blue Moon.
- Birthstone – Its birthstone is the amethyst. It symbolizes piety, humility, spiritual wisdom, and sincerity.
- Flowers – Its birth flower is the violet (Viola) and the common primrose (Primula vulgaris).
- Zodiac – The western zodiac signs of February are Aquarius (until February 19) and Pisces (February 20 onwards).
