I could not find any history on why this day is smack-dab in the middle of winter (I even googled ‘why fly a kite in the winter’), but there are quite a few kite festivals around this time of year. It does look like a fun way to get outside and get some fresh air. So, even if the ground is covered in snow and it’s freezing out, dig out your kites and get flying!

Kite History
The earliest kites were probably invented in China about 3000 years ago. People made these early kites out of bamboo and silk. Chinese people flew kites for fun, and also used kites in war to carry messages, to signal people far away, and to sometimes carry explosives into besieged cities.
