Mar 2 – Dr. Suess Day

IMG_6378s

Dr. Suess (Theodor Suess Geisel) was born on March 2. Geisel published 46 children’s books, which were often characterized by imaginative characters, rhyme, and frequent use of anapestic meter. His most celebrated books include the bestselling Green Eggs and Ham, The Cat in the Hat, One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, Horton Hatches the Egg, Horton Hears a Who!, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas!. He was a perfectionist in his work and he would sometimes spend up to a year on a book. It was not uncommon for him to throw out 95% of his material until he settled on a theme for his book. For a writer he was unusual in that he preferred to only be paid after he finished his work rather than in advance. Geisel’s birthday, March 2, has been adopted as the annual date for National Read Across America Day, an initiative on reading created by the National Education Association. (Wikipedia)

Cat in the Hat Hats

What You’ll Need:
  • Red and white contruction paper (large)
  • Stapler, tape, scissors, glue
How To Make:

1. Glue red strips of paper onto a large white piece of contruction paper.
2. Form the striped paper into a tube that will fit around your child’s head.
3. Trace a circle using the paper tube onto a red or white piece of contruction paper.
4. Draw a larger circle around that one and draw tabs on the inside of the inner circle.
5. Cut out the outside and the inside of the circle with the tabs.
6. Attach the tabs to the bottom side of the tube to make a brim for your hat.

Green Eggs and Ham

Oh so yummy! First read the book, Green Eggs and Ham…then suprise your kid(s) with this colorful treat and see what they think. Will they like Green Eggs and Ham? (except I didn’t make the ham green…)

4. Write each rhyming word on the white and red strips and alternate colors so the hat looks like the Cat in the Hat.
