Donut day began with a doctor trying to brighten the day of soldiers that he worked on during the first World War. On his first day, the doctor purchased 8 dozen donuts and gave one to each soldier he visited. Lieutenant General Samuel Geary was so touched by the doctor’s gesture that he started a fundraiser to help purchase the donuts, so that the doctor could continue providing donuts to his patients.
The Salvation Army became involved with the fundraising efforts and began providing social centers to meet many of the soldiers’ needs, which included all sorts of amenities, as well as donuts!
